Possibly more important than the health insurance company an individual or family selects is the quality of the doctors who are in the provider network for the health plan. Many doctors belong to a medical group that handles much of the administrative work such as setting appointments and billing. Health insurance companies contact with medical groups to provide their members with health care services. These medical groups and their doctors are then considered in-network for the health plan. Part of the selection of a health insurance plan is making sure you’ve chosen doctors are in-network or who have quality medical groups to choose from.

Medical Group quality ratings
The quality ratings for medical groups by county are from the Office of Patient Advocate website and the results are based on 2013 data. There is a star rating for providing recommended medical care and one for patient experience. Only forty counties are represented as some counties have medical groups with too few patients to create a meaningful rating. Only medical groups that contract with California HMOs for commercially insured members are included in the ratings. Some small or specialized medical groups do not participate in the quality reporting work. Even though these ratings are for group HMO plans, PPO and EPO members can benefit from these ratings.
