How to pay for your 2015 Covered California plan

Some carriers accept first month’s premium payment right through the CoveredCA website.

If you didn’t forget your Covered California user ID or your password, it’s easy to make the first month’s premium payment with a click from the enrollment website. However, for those individuals and families that were enrolled in a new health plan for 2015 but don’t have a Covered California, making the first payment may still be a challenge.

Consumers who enrolled in new health plans for 2015 with Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield, Kaiser or Molina can access making their first binder or premium payment right from the enrollment page of their Covered California account. Chinese Community Health Plan and Western Health Advantage are using a third party vendor to process payments from the Pay Now button. Health Net is scheduled to be available in January and L.A. Care, Sharp and Valley Health Plan have not established a payment link through Covered California.

Making the binder payment

The Covered California Premium Payment information page has the phone numbers for the carriers that aren’t offering the online binder payment option. Visit http://www.coveredca.com/youre-in/paying-your-premium/ to the how to make your first payment with the other carriers. It also has the direct links for all the carriers that are offering some sort of online premium payment option.

Clicking on the Enrollment check box will take you to the summary and payment options.

Payment Options

To access the Pay Now button to pay online directly through your Covered California account you’ll need to login to your account. Click the Enrollment check box and you’ll be taken to the enrollment summary web page which has a sub-title of Payment Options. Click the Pay Now button on the right hand side of the table that gives the household names and active health plan. If the box says Paid, you already have an existing health plan and the existing payment structure will roll over into 2015.

The Pay Now button will be active for carriers that accept online payments initiated through Covered California.

If you had a Covered California Customer Service Representative, Certified Enrollment Counselor or a Certified Insurance Agent enroll your household, before you created a Covered California account, the person assisting you should have received an access code. You need this six digit access code to link your enrollment to your new CoveredCa account. You’ll enter this access code on the early on when you are creating your CoveredCa account. It will ask “Do you want to link your account to an existing application?” You’ll click Yes and a box will pop up to enter the access code.

Tricky access codes

The access code is case sensitive for upper and lower case letters. Unfortunately, the san serif font that is used can make it hard to decipher if which some letters are. For instance, a lower case L looks the same as an upper case I. If your access code doesn’t work, you can call Covered California or the person who helped enroll you to generate a new access code. If you already have an account with an existing health plan, one of them, the original or the new one, will have to be withdrawn, in order for the access code to work.
