My People Ride In the Back of the Bus

Poetry, Poem, People, Bus, Equality, Justice, LGBT, Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Religion, Money

My people ride in the back of the bus

My people ride in the back of the bus

My people struggle to pay their bills

My people don’t want to be labeled

My people are the artists whose great works are not recognized

My people are those who don’t conform

My people are told they shouldn’t be able to marry the person they love

My people are ridiculed because they want to live out their gender identity

My people can have difficulty with everyday tasks

My people are not rich

My people don’t have perfect lives

My people drive cars that need repairs

My people are just trying to survive

My people are trying to raise families on limited incomes

My people may not speak my language

My people may have different religious customs

My people wear hats and scarves

My people may not eat meat

My people may not have college degrees

My people may not have a job

My people may not have a home

My people make mistakes

My people just want to be happy

My skin allows me to ride in the front of the bus

My gender allows me to climb corporate ladders like an escalator

I choose to be with my people

I will fight for my people

I identify with my people
