Special Enrollment Covered California Renewal Issue

If you enrolled in a Covered California health plan during a special enrollment period, and the effective date of the plan is either November 1st or December 1st, you will not be automatically renewed for the next plan year effective January 1st. Applications submitted in October or November are not put in the renewal status at Covered California.

Special enrollments with an effective date of November 1 or December 1 will not be renewed for the next plan year in Covered California.

All existing enrollments that were effective October 1st, or earlier, are automatically put in the renewal status at Covered California. Those enrollments will be passively renewed for the next plan in November.

However, individuals and families who had a qualifying event for a special enrollment period, and applied in October or November, are not in passive renewal status. You will need to push through the application for the next year. Select Apply Now from your home page to start the process.

If you enrolled for 11/1 or 12/1 effective date in Covered California, you home page for 2025 will show Apply Now, even though you are already enrolled for 2024.

All the information entered for the special enrollment will be in the system. You just need to confirm each page, review and submit.

Once you re-apply for 2025, you are prompted to select a health plan.

Once the application is approved for the next year, you need to add a health plan, even if you are already enrolled in a health plan for the current year.

You must add a health plan for 2025 so the subsidies are properly applied for the next plan year.

The subsidies may be dramatically different from the current year. This is your chance to change health plans.

If you enrolled in a dental plan, you will have to add that to 2025 as well.

If you enrolled in dental insurance for 2024, you will to have to enroll again for 2025.

If your health and dental plan show enrolled for 2024, and you renewed the exact same plans for 2025, you should not have to make a binder payment.

If you change health or dental plans, you must make your binder payment for the next year. IF your enrollment dashboard shows a status of Enrolled in the plans you selected for 2025, you should not have to make a binder payment. However, carefully watch the mail or emails to make sure the carrier recognizes your current payment status.
