Gravity stays down to earth helping youth

Gravity_ceo

Kevin McAllister, inspiration and founder of Gravity.

Kevin got the call at 9am. There was a foster youth that had aged out of the system and now was homeless. Kevin spent the rest of the day tacking down living arrangements and finally got the young man an independent living situation that evening. After you meet Kevin McAllister, you would expect nothing less from this gentleman.

The Calling

From this experience and working with youth on the fringes of our communities, Kevin heard the calling to establish Gravity. Dedicated to supporting youth and young adults, many in foster programs, Gravity aims to help them develop independent living skills. Very often children in the foster care system fail to develop not only solid independent living skills but education and study skills as well. Gravity was initially created to help guide these young adults through the basics of independent living.

First hand experience

Kevin is no stranger to the many hurdles and barriers that youth from disadvantaged backgrounds face. At 13 he was fortunate enough to be adopted into a family whose matriarch was a special education teacher. The combination of his own experience and his mother’s passion for students had a significant impact on his college education and ultimately launching Gravity.

Puzzle pieces into place

From a solid family environment, Kevin is a testament to how a child can thrive, have dreams, and begin to manifest those dreams into reality. He realized that the foundation to a sustainable and productive life for any teen was having the necessary fundamental life skills in place. Through his own childhood, education and work experience as a counselor, he was able to articular his vision in Gravity.

Building the team

When you look at any long-term successful non-profit philanthropic organization, you will always find that individual or core group of folks who not only have the vision but the passion as well. Kevin has assembled a Board of Directors that completely understands his vision and also has the life experiences to connect with the journey these young adults face.

Is the classroom calling?

At its heart, Gravity will always be about helping foster children, homeless youth and emancipated minors with navigating life’s maze to build a successful future. However, they are also versatile and open enough to capitalize on challenges that might best leverage their resources and skills. As they work closely with Community Collaborative Charter School, they are being drawn to support a bigger educational component for the teens.

Not held down

Kevin and Gravity Services certainly seem agile enough to direct their energy in a manner that provides the greatest benefit to the youth. Gravity is making a difference in the future of hundreds of teens that will benefit all of us in the future.
