Joshua Tree National Park, adjacent to the Coachella Valley, is a natural wonder theme park. From elevations of 2000′ to 5700′, it is high desert country. Granitic outcroppings have popped through over layered bedrock to provide a stark contrast in the landscape. Particular to the park is the Joshua Tree, which isn’t a tree at all but type of yucca cactus. Joshua Trees only grow over a certain elevation where the summers are a little cooler and where the winters provide a little more rainfall.
Hikes through out the park can be fairly easy to strenuous like up Ryan Mountain. The granite bolders and outcroppings provide an ample playground for novice and experienced rock climbers. While it may be a drive to get to, the spectacular scenery is sure to please everyone in the car.
I just have a blast walking around and climbing on the bolders, studying the plants and occasionally seeing a coyote. Joshua Tree is very special to me and if you visit I am sure you will have the same reaction. For more information www.nps.gov/jotr
