Public Health Emergency Extended Until October 13th Helping Medi-Cal Eligibility

Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra renewed the Public Health Emergency, triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic, for another 90 days on July 15, 2022. This means the Public Health Emergency conditions affecting Medi-Cal will be in place until October 13th.

The Public Health Emergency (PHE) conditions state that no one will be terminated from Medi-Cal unless they move out of state. Of course, individuals can report a change to their situation, such as gaining employer sponsored health insurance, and seek a termination from Medi-Cal.

The extended PHE means that Medi-Cal will delay, at least until October 13th, the annual redetermination of beneficiaries in the Medi-Cal program. Similarly, Covered California will not activate their automatic Medi-Cal to Covered California plan enrollment until the PHE ends and Medi-Cal begins the annual redetermination process. With the extension of the PHE, individuals and families can enroll in a Covered California health plan, outside of open enrollment, using the Qualifying Life Event of Pandemic (Covid-19)/Public Health Emergency that supports a Special Enrollment Period.
