Blogging can be a great inexpensive way for a nonprofit to get their message out to the community. Yes, it takes time and effort. But a successful blog will drive traffic to your website, promote your services to a wider audience and increase your donations.
More than a press release
Blogs aren’t press releases, but they can have similar elements. Blogging about an upcoming event can give more perspective and background than a simple press release. Beyond just giving the who, what, when and where of an event you can share additional details that can engage the community to come out and support your fundraiser or event.
You are more than just your services
Unless you have weekly community events or fundraisers, you’ll need to find more items of interest to blog about. A vibrant nonprofit has a variety of topics to write on including services, volunteers, staff, success stories, internships, current events, partner nonprofits and more. Not all blog posts have to be information pack. It’s perfectly fine to create blog posts that showcase the heart and soul of your nonprofit. Always include lots of pictures if you can. People love looking at pictures and video and are constantly searching for images.
Answer questions with blog posts
While blog posts are a great way to stay engaged with current supporters, donors, volunteers and those you serve, blogs can be the welcome mat for new people to find you. Most people search the Internet for answers to questions. Consider structuring some of your blogs to provide information to questions.
For example, if your nonprofit works to restore creeks, consider a post entitled “What are the biggest threats to our creek system?” If
you include the proper headings and tags, when someone does a search asking the question about creek pollution, your blog will pop-up in the search engine results. This person doing the search may never have heard of your nonprofit. You have just introduced yourself, through a blog post, to a potential volunteer or donor.
Search engines connect you to new people
Social media is great for promoting your blog posts and staying engaged with your audience. But there is nothing like the power of a search engine to bring new people to your door. If you can build up a solid archive of blog posts on your expertise, your website will climb in web search ranking, page views and deliver you more supporters and donors.
