When the baker decides to expand his business into the public market, he must abide by the rules of the road. He must get a business license. He must have his facilities inspected for cleanliness. He must not have discriminatory policies toward customers. The baker is no longer in a private market, but one that is regulated by the government for the benefit of the public.
One of the first changes consumers and agents will notice is under the information for household members. For the question of Sex (which should be gender), in addition to Male and Female, the drop down box will include Transgender: Male to Female and Transgender: Female to Male. While selecting the Sex is required, the Covered California application does not alert the consumer to the fact that rates are not based on gender AND you cannot be denied health insurance or receive a higher rate because you are transgender.
As a Certified Insurance Agent for Covered California I am scrupulous when it comes to reading each question on the application for health insurance exactly as written, except when the Covered California application asks for the sex of the applicant. Instead, I ask for the person’s or dependent’s gender. Covered California should stop asking about a person’s sex and allow them to specify a gender.

Sacramento’s Pride Festival for 2013 was kicked off by a colorful parade down N Street. In addition to the local contingent of LGBTQI support and commercial services participating in the parade, Sacramento’s religious organizations were well represented. If it hadn’t been for the prominent display of rainbow balloons and flags surrounding the various churches and temples in the parade, I would have thought I was in the Bible Belt.
In valiant and desperate attempt to influence the Supreme Court’s review of the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has filed two “friend of court briefs” outlining their opposition to same-sex marriage. Both amicus briefs are a mix of historic legal precedents and logic infused […]

Individual local churches are separating from their national denominations over the acceptance of the ordination of gay clergy and the blessing of same sex unions. This split, separation or dismissal, as it is often […]
