Past federal tax returns are a great starting point and guide, but an individual or family’s wages may have significantly changed in 2013 and may change again in 2014.
Registered Domestic Partnerships get a break under the ACA
Registered domestic partnerships are receiving a financial break under the Affordable Care Act not available to married couples. For married couples, if either one is offered employer sponsored health insurance that automatically excludes the spouse and children from receiving tax credits to lower monthly premiums on health plans purchased through the state health insurance exchange of the ACA*.
Qualifying Events allow for purchase of health plan outside of open enrollment
Under the Affordable Care Act, individual and family plans (IFPs) will have coverage benefits very much like an employer sponsored small group plan. Another way in which the new IFP plans will mirror a group plan are enrollment restrictions. Individuals and families will only be able to enroll into the new IFP plans outside of open enrollment if there is a “qualifying event”.

Affordable Care Act Agent Code of Conduct Pledge
With the launch of open enrollment for the Affordable Care Act, now more than ever, consumers who seek out the knowledge, professionalism and experience of a licensed insurance agent need to be reassured that they aren’t drinking from a poisoned glass. In a modest attempt to help guide consumers to agents who won’t engage in misrepresentation or questionable sales tactics, I have developed a pledge and code of conduct surrounding the sales of ACA compliant health plans by agents.
Kaiser Small Group Tax Credit Calculator
Kaiser Permanente has put together a very simple to use Affordable Care Act tax credit calculator for small groups. The calculator only works for small business groups in California. It is not calibrated for non-profits which have a different tax credit allowance for employer contributions to employee health insurance for 2014.

Anthem Blue Cross California has released information regarding the coverage of medically necessary procedures to treat gender identity disorder, commonly referred to as a person being transgender. Effective immediately, all new and grandfathered plans will cover surgeries, hormone therapy and counseling associated with transitioning from the birth sex to the sex the individual identifies with.

If an agent is strongly opposed to Obamacare they should seriously consider not even selling ACA compliant health plans. Clients are better served by those who believe in the product than those who are selling just for the money.
