This post is a work in progress. I will add to it as I document and acquire new information about the history of the Granite Bay region. If you would like to share your recollections and information, please contact me and I will be happy to include your family history into the post. Early History […]

Transgender and Pregnancy Health Care Rights Jeopardized With Texas Court Ruling
A Texas U.S. District Court Judge ordered the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) not to enforce rules against discriminating against transgender health care services in health insurance policies. The order was issued on December 31, 2016 before the new nondiscrimination rules were set to go into effect. The nondiscrimination rules are part of Section 1557, the nondiscrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). A lawsuit brought by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty
How I Wrote and Published My First Book
In the absence of a writer’s personality I do have a curious mind, a desire to be creative, and an interest in sharing my work with other people. When I reviewed the amount of content I had produced pertaining to the history of the Folsom Lake region I figured it would make a good book. So I decided to write and publish a book.
Pictures and history of Folsom Lake and American River during the drought
As the lake level drops, the history is revealed. As Folsom Lake hit record low water levels in 2015, a whole lot of history was revealed. A drought shrunken Folsom Lake of 2015 was the highlight for a guy like me who had been hiking around the reservoir for years looking for historical sites. After numerous hikes around the North and South Forks of the American River at Folsom Lake, I finally organized my photographs and historical research into a book, Hidden History Beneath Folsom Lake – Hiking Across a Dry Lake in Time of Drought.
Diary of a Grand Juror in Placer County
As I conclude two years on the Placer County Grand Jury I’m struck by how the experience was so completely different than I could have ever imagined. There were periods of intense frustration, brought on by my own personal view of organization and commitment, and moments of satisfaction that we were reporting on important aspects of local government. My experience was not unique. All the Grand Jurors I served with felt alternatively gratified by our work while carrying the weight acrimonious debate and fellow jurors who failed to carry their work load.
Covering the costs of a High Deductible health plan
Even with the Obamacare subsidies, many individuals and families still opt for the least expensive Bronze high deductible health plans. The high deductible health plans require the consumer to spend $4,500 to $6,500 in a medical deductible before any real cost sharing with the health insurance company starts. As more consumers opt for these least expensive Bronze plans more insurance companies are creating insurance products to help cover the high deductible of these plans. But are these indemnity plans worth the money and will they actually pay when you need the money?
Calculating the value of the maximum out of pocket amount for health insurance
All individual and family health insurance plans include a maximum out-of-pocket amount that is the most an individual will pay on in-network health care services for a calendar year. This is particularly important for sole proprietors and self-employed people as one emergency room visit can easily top $20,000, and without health insurance, can imperil the person’s business. The value of the maximum out-of-pocket benefit can be measured and compared between different metal level health plan tiers and carriers as one guide in selecting a health plan.
Historic Rose and Rock Springs of Granite Bay
I had always noticed Rose Springs and Rock Springs marked on maps that encompassed the south Placer county region we know today as Granite Bay. It wasn’t until Folsom Lake hit historically low water levels that what I think are Rose and Rock springs became apparent to me.
American River Salmon Falls bridge to bridge hike
A 2015 drought depleted Folsom Lake has allowed a rare opportunity to hike from the current Salmon Falls bridge over the South Fork of the American River all the way down to the old bridge which is usually covered by Folsom Lake. What makes this hike so special is that the South Fork of the American is flowing free like a river should.
Is a high school IB Diploma worth the sacrifice?
As parent of a student who received his International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in 2015, I have to wonder if all his sacrifice to complete the course work was worth it. Given that the college he finally decided to attend will not award him any college credits for the IB exams he passed was all of his work in vein? Perhaps he would have been better off just taking Advanced Placement courses and avoided the stress and late night study sessions that made him such a cranky teenage?
